Almaty [KZ] - New Trolleybuses and a new route

Almaty – Kazakhstan
The Trolleybus system in Kazakhstan's largest city has again undergone a reorganisation program. This resulted in the introduction of a new route on 26.03.2009 from Sayakhat to Kargalinka which is route 16. It uses, for the most part, existing overhead and travels parallel to various existing routes. There are now 10 Trolleybus routes in service; routes 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 16 and 19.
Twenty of the Chinese built Neoplan designed Trolleybuses (see our report from 27.10.2008) have been delivered the remainder are still to follow. They have been designated the following fleet numbers 1100 to 1113 and 3125 to 3130. The fleet in Almaty currently has a strength of 160 vehicles. For the future it has been proposed that Trolleybuses from their own production take precedence over foreign vehicles and failing this then Trolleybus shells from foreign manufacturers with electrics and fittings form Kazakhstan based firms.
