Mexico City (Ciudad de Mexico) [MX] - Procurement of 100 new trolleybuses proposed

K. Budach - 14.08.17

The discussion to preserve the extensive trolleybus network in Mexico City has taken on a new dimension, as the acquisition of 100 new trolleybuses and 150 diesel hybrid units has been proposed. STE, the trolleybus operator, has confirmed this news. Additionally, the overhaul of 100 older trolleys of the 4200 and 9700 series is intended, in order to prolong the life cycle of these vehicles. The revamp would include the replacement of electrical components.

Further enhancement plans recommend the establishment of two more BRT-style "priority bus lines" using trolleybuses. These so called "Zero Emissions Corridors" would run on the following route: Metro Boulevard Puerto Aéreo - Metro El Rosario - Metro Chapultepec

The 150 hybrid buses are intended for deployment on the BRT corridors 4 and 8 between Insurgentes and Constitución de 1917.

The 35-year old MASA/Toshinba trolleys are still in regular service in Mexico City. In January 2017, one of these units is seen running on "Eje 7 Sur", near the metro station Mixcoac. Photo: Stefan von Mach
