Chomutov [CZ] - 15 new trolleybuses on order
J. Lehmann - 14.08.17
After the municipal authorities voted to retain the local trolleybus operation in April 2016 and also managed to secure a new cooperation agreement for shared public transport services with the neighboring town of Jirkov through the signing of a 10-year contract, a tender for 15 new trolleybuses and 2 articulated CNG units was issued in late March 2017. This modernization measure aims to rejuvenate the aging high-floor fleet. The renewal process is supported by EU funds. In mid July 2017, it was then announced that Skoda Electric had won the contract to supply the new trolleybuses with an order valued at roughly 6.64 million EUR. Solaris will deliver the two articulated CNG buses.
10 of the new low-floor trolleybuses will be articulated vehicles, while the other 5 will be single units. As Solaris is also delivering the trolleybus coach bodies, they will be classed as 27Tr and 26Tr.
The interurban trolleybus network in Chomutov and Jirkov opened in 1995 and the aging fleet of Skoda 15Tr units also dates from that year. On 7 September 2015, the articulated trolley 001 is seen in use on line 51. Photo: J. Lehmann
