Rosario [AR] - New trolleybuses from Russia arrive
K. Budach - 26.06.17
In the mean time, all 12 new trolleybuses from the Russian producer Trolza have arrived at their destination in Argentina and commenced initial trial runs. In addition to the 12 contractually ordered vehicles, Trolza is supplying an extra 2 vehicles to make up for significant project delays.
The new low-floor single units of the "Megapolis" type are expected to enter revenue service on line Q later this year. This line uses part of the existing power lines from line K, before branching off in battery mode to cover non-electrified route sections. The powerful battery packs allow off-wire range extension for up to 20 km. Once the hybrid trolleys are back under the wires, the batteries re-charge themselves. Before the Russian-built trolleys can enter public service, a few remaining issues need to be resolved as part of the authorization process.
In the 1960s, Rosario once had an extensive trolleybus network featuring up to 8 lines and a large network, but most of it disappeared over time, with even the last line getting provisionally shut down in 1993. After modernization, line K re-opened in 1994 and has been the lone electric bus corridor in the city since then.
