San Francisco [US] - Firm order for new trolleybuses
K. Budach - 12.09.16
In late July, firm orders were placed with the producer New Flyer for 33 more articulated trolleybuses of the Xcelsior CT60 type. These are to be delivered in 2017 and are planed to replace the same number of older Skoda ETI 15Tr-SF articulated units dating from 2002/2003. As reported earlier, these Czech-built high floor trolleybuses had already been withdrawn in early May, after services on line 49 were temporarily switched to diesel and hybrid buses. Presently, the Skoda trolleys are stored at a depot outside the city, as final decisions about their future are still to be made. Once construction works for the modernization of line 49 have been completed, the route will feature BRT attributes with segregated trolleybus lanes. It is precisely for this line and these services that the additional Xcelsior CT60 are being procured.
The New Flyer articulated units are now also being deployed on the "rapid" line 5R, as seen here with 7253 in revenue service on this accelerated express route. Photo: Anthony Nachor
