Merida [VE] - 80% more ridership since extension
K. Budach - 22.08.16
Since the extension of trolleybus line 1 to the centrally located Paseo Domingo in summer 2015, passenger numbers have grown significantly, going up from 30 000 to 50 000 per weekday. The entire trolley route is now 15.1 km long and runs mainly on its own BRT alignment, even though there are still gaps in the power lines.
Since the official inauguration of the first route section of the local BRT system in June 2007, over 40 million passengers have used the service. Line 1 runs at frequent intervals from 6:00 - 20:00 on weekdays and from 7:00 - 20:00 on Saturdays. Curiously, there is a service break from 9:30 - 11:30 in the morning. On Sundays and public holidays, diesel buses are deployed, often running on altered routes and beyond the extent of the catenary.
The fleet still consists of the original batch of 45 high floor trolleys supplied by the consortium of Mercedes-Benz/Hspano/Vossloh-Kiepe. These are designed for boarding at elevated, high floor BRT platforms. For Sunday services, non-articulated Chinese diesel buses are deployed.
