Odesa/Odessa [UA] - 45 new trolleybuses thanks to EBRD funding

In November 2015, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the municipal authorities of Odessa signed a contract for a 12-year loan valued at 8 million EUR. The much needed funding will allow investments into the infrastructure of the local trolleybus network and the acquisition of 45 new low-floor units.
The city's most recent vehicle procurement dates from 2009, when 16 new low-floor trolleys of the Russian-built TrolZa-5265.00 Megapolis type were purchased. In 2013, 13 pre-used trolleys were acquired from the Czech Republic. Presently, the whole Odessa fleet consists of 170 trolleybuses, of which 100 are in running order. Most of these trolleys still are of the older ZiU 682 type and date from 1989.
Similar loan programs to improve urban public transport are also intended for the other Ukrainian cities Chernihiv and Chernivtsi.
With a total of 85 units, the older ZiU 682 trolleybuses from 1987-93 still remain the most numerous in Odessa and make up about half of the local fleet. Unless they have been fitted with advertising vinyls, most of them now sport a light green livery, which was applied in 2009 in oder to match the colors of the modern trolley. On 7 April 2016, Nr. 627 is seen in regular service on line 2. Photo: Alexander Velmozhko
