Gdynia [PL] - Two new trolleys tendered
J. Lehmann - 16.09.15
According to an announcement in the Official Journal of the European Union, Solaris has won the contract for 2 new low-floor trolleybuses with a length of 12.5 m and auxiliary battery packs. Incidentally, Solaris was the only bidder. Delivery of the two vehicles is now foreseen for March 2016. Already in spring 2015, two very similar Solaris units entered revenue service in Gdynia, numbered as 3087 and 3088. Following their deployment, Nr. 3047 was withdrawn. This was one of the 28 former Mercedes-Benz diesel units that had been converted to a trolleybus at the Gdynia workshops from 2004 to 2009. It entered service as an electric vehicle in August 2008, having originally started its diesel career in the German city of Brandenburg in 1993.
Additionally, the only low-floor trolleybus of prior Polish production, has been withdrawn from frontline duties and is now only used as a reserve vehicle. Nr. 3004 was built by Jelcz in 1999 and is pictured below, on a photo dating from 2006.
