Chieti [IT] - Landslide leads to service suspension
J. Lehmann - 27.04.15
On 6 March 2015, large parts of Central Italy were badly affected by severe storms. The strong rains triggered a number of landslides. In Chieti, the railway station, old town and trolleybus route were partially damaged. Along the Via Madonna della Misericordia two trees and two catenary posts were dislodged. Although the road has been partially repaired since then, the catenary has not yet been rectified. While it has been structurally secured, it remains impassable for trolleybuses.
Previously, electric bus services had finally started in the city on 1 July 2013, following a long construction and commissioning process. Soon afterwards though, lightning hit one of the substations and network power was so limited, that only three trolleybuses could operate at once. This unsatisfactory operating situation lasted for about a year, until the repaired substation came back onto the grid in late summer 2014. Normally, five trolleybus diagrams operate on line 1 in Chieti and special booster services are also put into effect during peak hours for school children.
