Sevastopol [UA] - Trial runs with “Admiral” test bus

J. Lehmann - 11.05.15

Prior to the launch of two days of extensive trial runs with the new trolleybus type PKTS-6281 "Admiral" on 8 May 2015, the vehicle was presented to the public. The dynamic design was created by the Moscow-based company Transport Systems. Final assembly of the bus took place in the workshop of the trolleybus operator in the City of Tver, some 180 km northwest of Moscow. Final authorisation is also planned to take place in Tver and expected to require about 4 months.

The new trolleybus has a capacity for 100 passengers and can attain speeds up to 60 km/h. The low-floor design can accommodate one wheelchair. What makes this trolleybus distinct is that is has been made entirely of high-grade plastics, which significantly enhance the all-weather durability of the vehicle and thereby also prolong the operational life cycle. This next generation of Russian trolleybus has been designed and developed as part of an extensive federal program, with funding allocated to the tune of 1.3 billion RUB over the course of 5 years.

During the trials in Sevastopol a diesel motor was still used to operate off the catenary and to provide range extension. Eventually the “Admiral” series vehicles are to feature batteries instead of internal combustion engines as their source of auxiliary power.

An initial phase of fleet renewal was recently implemented in Sevastopol, through the arrival of 10 new and 10 pre-used Moscow trolleybuses of the type TrolZa-5265.00 „Megapolis“. These have locally been numbered as 1601-1620. In 2014 and early 2015 3 more, partially low-floor Trolza Optima (1622, 1624 , 1625) plus 2 additional Megapolis were also delivered to the city. One of these trolleys has enough battery capacity to operate up to 15 km off the wires. As an addition to the local line 14, a roughly 5 km route extension has opened, in order to better connect the “Metro” shopping center with public transport.
