Quito [EC] - Fleet renewal back on the political agenda

The 113 type O 405 GT articulated trolleybuses of the highly successful BRT system in Quito, Ecuador are now between 15 and 19 years old and will soon require replacement. Because all of these Mercedes-Benz/Hispano Carrocería/Vossloh-Kiepe buses have already accumulated more than 1 million route kilometers each, planning for their replacement started last year, although no call for tenders was issued at the time. This year though, the necessary renewal of the aging fleet has been firmly established on the political agenda and the initial procurement of 50-60 units is foreseen.

For quite some time already, the local operator Empresa Pública Metropolitana de Transporte de Pasajeros de Quito (EPMTPQ) has been deploying so-called “express” diesel buses on the dedicated trolleybus lane during rush hour.

Presently, a short extension of the 17.8 km long trolleybus line is being built, which will then reach the major interchange Estación Intermodal, some 750 m from the present terminus Estación Norte. Each day about 215 000 passengers use the popular trolleybuses, although these only run over the full extent of the electrified route at night, between midnight and 5:00 am. During daytime, various services are made to overlap on the main corridor and thereby offer an intensive service frequency during peak hours, with bus departures every 1.5 minutes.
