Ceske Budejovice [CZ] - Call for tenders and fleet renewal

K. Budach - 15.12.14

Presently the modern, low-floor fleet in Ceske Budejovice is made up of 31 Skoda type 25Tr articulated units delivered in 2005, which use bus bodies supplied by Iveco. This is supplemented by 2 further type 27Tr units delivered by Skoda in cooperation with Solaris in 2013. At the same time, the much older Skoda 15Tr buses dating from 1990/91 still make up much of the fleet. Despite of previous modernization, the replacement of the 15Tr units is now foreseen, as soon as the funding has been approved. The older trolleys will then be offered for re-sale and therefore could end up getting cascaded to a different city abroad. The Ceske Budejovice fleet still also includes 10 modernized 15TrM high floor units dating from 2002 – 2004. These trolleys are fitted with Matrix destination displays.

The latest call for tenders now specifies the delivery of a further two articulated units featuring air-conditioning and auxiliary battery packs, allowing them to run up to 10 km off the wires. The low quantity of vehicles specified, means that further tenders are likely to follow in the coming years and that for now the local operator wants to gain initial experience with the battery systems.

Of the newest units in use in Ceske Budejvocie, the type 27Tr buses are used throughout the network. In December 2014, the Solaris MetroStyle trolleybus 330 from Salzburg was in town on demonstration runs. The public services with the dynamic low-floor vehicle were well received and the vehicle was considered a potential boon for the “modern” image of public transportation in the city.

On the 8 different trolleybus lines in Ceske Budejovice, 42 units are needed during weekday peak services. In total a fleet of 60 vehicles remains operationally available. This year’s timetable change only brought with it minor adjustments, mainly relating to the re-shuffling of the diagrams served by low-floor units. In the Maj part of town, the timings of lines 1, 3 and 8 were also altered and extended somewhat.
