Sao Paulo (SPT) [BR] - Rapid Pace of Fleet Renewal
K. Budach - 15.07.13
The renewal program for the trolleybus fleet on the urban network in Brazil's Sao Paulo metropolis is proceeding at a rapid pace. After all 50 vehicles in the first order for three-axle BRT Millenium CAIO trolleybuses on Scania K270 chassis with electrical equipment from WEG/Eletra and had been delivered and put into service, delivery of the second tranche of identical vehicles, which had only been ordered in April, began in late June. They received fleet numbers from 1 551 ff. Nine vehicles have been delivered so far; they are now waiting in Itaim depot to take up passenger service.
All 50 trolleybuses will be in use by October and replace the 49 high-floor Marco Polo trolleybuses that were still in service in mid-July. For passengers, the new trolleybuses in many ways represent a leap comfort, especially because of the barrier-free access, the improved on-board information, the improved air conditioning and not least because of the increased capacity of the new vehicles. The new three-axle vehicles are 15 meters long compared to only 10.9 meters for the old two-axle vehicles.
For the transport operator the new trolleybuses provide the advantage of lower power consumption, despite their much larger dimensions. The Marco Polo two-axle trolleybuses were indeed built in the nineteen nineties, but most trolleybuses used older electrical components from decommissioned trolley buses dating from the seventies and early eighties.
