Balti [MD] - 23 New Trolleybuses with European Funding

In a prior information notice in the Official Journal of the European Union 13.07.2013, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development gave notice of a planned procurement of 23 trolleybuses for the second largest city in Moldova. A call for tenders will be published in the second half of this year. The project includes the purchase of new vehicles and spare parts for the trolleybus fleet. A loan of 3 million has been granted, which must be repaid in twelve years at an interest rate of 5.5% p.a. In addition to the loans from the European Union a grant of 1.6 million has been provided.
Currently, the fleet consists of 35 trolley buses, over 20 of which are of type ZiU 682, which were acquired between 1980 and 1993. The last two (# 150 and 151) were converted from articulated vehicles. It was ten years later that 14TrM Skoda (154) came , then in 2004/5 three BKM 20101 came from Belarus, while recent procurements are seven VMZ 5298.00 TMC (-375) with fleet numbers 158-164 entered service in 2008.
The trolleybus system comprises three routes, which open up the entire city network.. A fourth route is planned. The trolleybus system opened about 40 years ago on 21.06.1972.
