La Spezia [IT] - After the Change of Generation
J. Lehmann - 17.06.13
According to the promise by the head of the ATC, Enrico Sassi, trolleybuses will return to route 1 in la Spezia at the end of 2013. Operation had been discontinued on 08.06.2012 after the trolleybus depot was closed and cleared to make way for the construction of a library. Also, the trolleybuses at the Museo Nazionale Trasporti had to leave their long time home.
However, the purchase of eight new trolley buses has been made possible with the help of EU funds. Solaris was awarded the contract for the vehicles, while the electrical equipment is being supplied by Vossloh Kiepe. The eight vehicles will be delivered by September and resume service on the last remaining trolleybus route, route 1. In addition, after completion of the overhead, it is planned to reintroduce trolleybuses on route 3, which is currently the most heavily used route in the ATC network.
It operates at 10-minute intervals, while, since 2005, route 1 only operates at a 20-minute frequency using three trolley buses. In the current summer schedule from 17 June to 14 September 2013, route 1 only has a 30-minutes frequency, while route 3 runs every 15 minutes. Route 37, which is offered only at peak times, is to be merged with route 1. Trolleybuses will travel the approximately 1.3 km long extension using their diesel engines.
