J. Lehmann - 01.04.13
Delivery of the new series of trolleybuses (fleet numbers 1700-1704) began in late March 2013. The first new vehicle, a VMZ 5298.01 "Avangard" low-floor trolleybus entered service on trolleybus route 14. After publication of the tender for 79 trolleybuses in 2012, the contract was awarded in late 2012 to two bidders. In December 2012, the contracts were signed with Trans Alfa from Vologda and TrolZa of Engels in the Saratov region. Trans Alfa is providing 35 VMZ 5298.01 "Avangard" low-floor trolleybuses, which were offered at a price of $171,000 per unit. TrolZa offered its high-floor ZiU 682-06 at a unit price of $138,000 - the delivery of 44 units is expected to begin in May 2013.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has made an investment grant of $15.6 million for the purchase of the new trolleybuses.
In autumn 2012 routes 9 and 10 were respectively closed or diverted via the existing network due to road works but resumed their normal routeing from 09.11.2012. The system currently consists of nine trolleybus routes (4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16 and 17). The 79 new vehicles will not only rejuvenate the fleet, but the existing routes will enjoy improved frequencies of at least every 10 minutes and closed routes such route 7 will be reopened
