Zurich [CH] - Further articulated Trolleybuses delivered.
J. Lehmann - 30.01.07
The first two series vehicles of the new "Swisstrolley 3" type vehicles were delivered to Zurich at the end of January 2007. The reduction of the headway, on route 32, which was introduced in the new timetables valid as of December 2006, to a 5 minute service during the rush hour period, made it necessary to order a further two Trolleybuses. Zurich will now be taking delivery of 18 instead of the original 16 articulated Trolleybuses ordered. These should have all been delivered by the autumn of this year after which delivery of the 17 double articulated Trolleybuses will commence.
It is planned to deliver two vehicles per month. The January vehicles were designated the internal fleet numbers 145 and 146. Trolleybus Nr. 144 was delivered during the summer of 2006 and underwent extensive testing on the system in Zurich. These new vehicles will be replacing the first of the Mercedes Benz series which were delivered during the period between 1986 and 1989. The first of the type "O 405 GTZ" to be replaced will be numbers 1 to 11 and 13 to 36. By the time they are withdrawn these Mercedes Benz Trolleybuses will have covered an average mileage of around 1.2 million Kilometres. The new Trolleybuses are low floor throughout and are equipped with air conditioning. The price per Vehicle is 1.17 million Swiss francs or approximately 722,000 Euros.
